Chipset Intel 82443BX
Memory 256 MB
Memory Type 128+128;|DIMM|SDRAM|;T5
Total RAM slots 2
Video board S3 Graphics Inc. Savage4
Video mode 800x600, 32 bits/pixel
OS Version Windows XP 5.1.2600

I have 3 physical slots with 128 in each.

256 is recognized.


I'm positive my limit is 384.

If you have upgraded to 384 on your Quantex what size modules did you use?


Should I just go for it and pop a 256 in the middle slot?


Best buy is selling 256 for $19($15 rebate.)

Yes. The software that described my config said I have 2 slots
yet I have 3 128 modules in place.

Check the architecture of the DIMMs.  Though the BX/ZX chipset will support 128 MBit DRAM (8 chips per 128 MByte module), it won't support three of them because of the internal banking arrangement.

You should be able to use three DIMMs built on 64 MBit DRAM (i.e., 16-chip, 128 MByte modules), but you likely won't get three, 8-chip 128 MByte modules to work.

One of each should work, as long as you use 128 MBit or lower RAM density (16 chips for the 256, 8 for the 128).

On some ZX designs, the last slot won't take a double-banked module - so a 256 may not work in there.
