URL for Poasters.com
« on: Jul 19, 2002, 06:52 AM »
I've updated all the internal forum links to http://www.poasters.com. Many of you early visitors (and all of the admins and moderators) came here using the 63.151.145.65 IP address, since we had just changed hosts and we were waiting for the completion of the poasters.com DNS propagation. After one week now, the DNS propagation process should be complete for the overwhelming majority of users.

For those of you who bookmarked this site using the IP address, you'll want to go ahead and change your bookmarks to http://www.poasters.com. There is no guarantee of how much longer the IP address will continue to bring you here, since the IP addresses can be changed by the host without notice.

You will not need to re-register, but you will probably have to login again.

Note: If for some reason http://www.poasters.com does not bring you to this forum, continue using the IP address for another day or two.

Everyone will indeed have to re-login, as the cookie they logged in with is set to the IP address, not poasters.com :)

I hope not!  That would bring the site down for days until the dns changes took effect!  Probably won't happen, though.

It is important that users visit the site through the domain name rather than the ip, so that any future server moves can take place.

I dunno. According to FutureQuest, they can change the IP Address internally. I'll find the note and copy it here later.

Okay, I may very well be going nuts as far as the IP Address thingy is concerned. I can't find any reference at FutureQuest to what I thought I read. The best I could find was to only use it as a temporary address, until the DNS fully propagated.

The article you read could have been referring to ftp access.  That ip address could be easily changed without any problems, as long as they informed all the users trying to access it, and they may very well do that to prevent unauthorized access to their systems.

The ip address linked to the domain name, however, could not be changed without requiring another full dns propagation that could take several days.  It could theoretically be changed seamlessly, but that would require setting up another identical site on the new address until the dns changes take effect.  I've never heard of it being done that way, but you never know.

Yep, that's it. I found it in an email that FutureQuest sent.
