Samba to Vista = Unusable

Has anyone else had problems accessing Samba shares from a Vista machine?  It only seems to be reads which are the problem.  Writes to the shares go at a normal speed.
Samba -> Vista = ~500kB/s
Vista -> Samba = ~8MB/s (not fast, but usable enough)
Copying to and from an XP share is fine, as is Vista to Vista.  The only issue is with Vista and Samba and I can't figure out what's causing it.

Yes, Samba has actually achieved quite a lot, for free software.  It allows a Linux machine to co-exist on a Windows network and it can even act as a PDC server similar to Windows Server 2003.

In this case perhaps I jumped the gun and was too quick to blame Linux and Samba.  It's not even Vista's fault.  The fault appears to lie with the Broadcom 440x series NIC integrated in my Dell machine.  If you force 100Mbps Full Duplex, Samba transfers are horrendous but other types of transfers appear to work fine (don't ask me why).  It it's set to Automatic speed negotiation, speeds seem fine.
