YABB vs Invsion BB any opinions?

Hi Poasters,

I am managing a not for profit website and have installed Invision BB. All was fine for a while, even kept many spammers out. Recently though I am getting an error message, even before logging on that says,

QuoteSorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information.

The error returned was: Sorry, you are not permitted to use this board
I click on help and nothing occurs, redisplays same error.

I tried PHPBB previoulsy (uninstalled after loads of spammers) and now InvisionBB. My host has YABB also as a recent choice that I can install through CPANEL X.

I know this forum runs on YABB. Any experiences with Invision or other BB apps?

Pros/Cons appreciated.

We've been using YaBBSE since July 2002 with great success. Unfortunately, YaBBSE is old news that is no longer officially supported. YaBBSE is now an entirely new software package known as Simple Machines Forum (SMF). I've been playing around with SMF for some time now and I'm really impressed. If we were setting up Poasters for the first time today, we'd almost certainly go with SMF.

I'm not versed with Invision Power Board, but you might take a look at Invision's site for help. One other thing to consider is that whatever problem you're experiencing might be host related, so you might want to take the time to rule out that possibility.

I can't give you any advice with any other forums other than to avoid Snitz Forums. I know that some of the problems we had when we used Snitz was host related, but not entirely. It simply does not fare as well as boards that use PHP and MySQL.

We considered purchasing a vBulletin license when we were in the process of dumping Snitz 2000 forums some years back, but we were swayed into converting to YaBBSE by a very smart and talented teenager named Eric, who bent over backwards to assist us in the transition from an Access based forum to YaBBSE. Eric is the creator of the YaPP portal we use here at Poasters.

Anyway, make sure you use a quality host. We use FutureQuest to host Poasters. Although they cost a little more than the norm, they are excellent in many aspects. If you are interested I can give you some very good recommendations for inexpensive hosts that provide exceptional service and lots of bang for the buck. Even Invision Power Hosting is one to consider if a free license for Invision Power Board (otherwise $199) is important to you.

Thanks Scuzzy,

I have a host that is really cheap for not for profit organizations and I have no budget to speak of, so that limits me to a large extent. They have been great up to this point.

I will contact the host admin about the error and discuss YABB with her. In the meantime, I installed it but have not made it public as I need to play with it a bit.

Any tips on keeping the spammers and hackers out?

I'm using Lunarpages to host my personal site. Although I haven't been with them very long, they have a good reputation and I am so far quite pleased with them. A personal plan is less than $100 p/year and includes one domain name registration. Their basic plan is quite feature rich and will suffice for most people.

If you're going to start with a new bulletin board, then don't use YaBB. You're MUCH better off installing a copy of SMF. The software is more polished than YaBB, and you'll have much better support. Of course, this means that you'll have to upload the software yourself, which will take awhile if you're on dial up. Even so, it's worth it. If you were to go with Lunarpages, SMF is already provided and easily installed through the CPanel.

The best tip I can give for keeping spammers out is to remain vigil. We depend on our moderators to keep the place tidy, and they do an excellent job. We also use a "silent delete" method for people who might otherwise abuse our forum. Instead of getting into arguments with these idiots, we quietly delete their garbage and then ban them by username, email address, and IP address. We never allow our forum to be used as a battle ground. We won't even acknowledge their existence via email. We have found this to be powerfully effective.

This is primarily a family oriented computer forum and the free speech argument doesn't play here. Our guidelines are very clear. I suggest adopting a similar approach by keeping your standards high and enforcing them as necessary.

I am using Acorn Host at 50% off their already low rates to host the church website and forum. I did not see SMF as an option in Cpanel. So guess I'll try the YABB for now. I don't want to make it any more complex or have it take more time to get it up than I need to.

As for the spammer advice, thanks. I will keep to "silent delete."

Thanks again Scuzzy.

Acorn Host prices are certainly low.

I wouldn't want you to do any more work than you are willing, nor for you to exceed your comfort level. YaBBSE is certainly a good forum, and it has done well for us. But there's no doubt in my mind that SMF is way ahead of YaBBSE and well worth the effort. If Acorn Host only has YaBB (without the 'SE'), then I'd recommend against it.

I just took a look at Acorn Host here and it shows that SMF is included through the CPanel. You may want to take another look, or give their support a call.

I just logged into Cpanel, no SMF. I'll Email Emma and see what's what.

Thanks

Yep, they had it on Cpanel X in a sub menu under Fantastico.

I am going to play around with it a little before publishing to users.

Thanks again

Cool! I love Poasters, too!

Scuzzy; I'm not too crazy about Ace, though

You're just crazy in every other regard.

And here's that personal site; The Ode or To The Great Scuzzy.

The poetry is almost up to the quality of the haikus and song lyrics poasted previously here.

Ace; I should blog myself.

Holy cow! I just got done looking through the pictures and I was stunned at how ugly I am. What on earth is that stuff on top of my head? Hair?

I don't like my car, either. What on earth was I thinking when I bought it? And do I work in some sort of stupid cubicle? Geez, I hope not.

Scuzzy; My girlfriend is kind of cute, though. I can't wait to meet her.

Your welcome.  Now you have to start carrying a comb, again.

It was that, or Cuban cooking.  Or your stupid record of academic achievement "my 9th grade work."  "my 10th grade work."  Criminy.  Like NYC schools are that tough.  And, not to be critical, but I'm not seeing great mastery of web based software here, if you don't mind me saying.

Ace; you had a lousy NBA season, too.

Look, I'm not gonna carry a comb, okay? It just ain't gonna happen. If necessary, I'll shave my head again just like I did last night. Heck, just like I do every night.

I don't know how in h*ck I grew so much hair while I slept, but I'm not gonna put up with it. As I write this, I'm soaking my head in gasoline so that I can set it on fire. Hopefully, that will prevent any more hair from ever growing on my head. Come to think of it, it will probably keep anything from every growing on my head again.

Scuzzy; I can't find a match. And please don't tell me, "How about your face and my ***."

Well, just be careful about that tale from that old wife about it just growing back thicker if you do

hey.  Hold on a minute.  Hmm...

Ace; I gotta go shave my head.  This sounds a lot more promising than trying those transplants from my shoulders and chest and back.

Bill

Instead of transplants, you could try a "comb up," as contrasted to a "comb over."  Might accomplish a couple of things.
