Is it true we wont be seeing a 64 bit super computer desktop for a few years? Thanks

wonderings

I thought I heard Longhorn was going to be 64 bit, if thats so, then probably another 3 years before its released... if all goes well. It sure does take Microsoft a long time to release something that will be sub par

You can get Windows XP 64-bit right now:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/upgrade.mspx

A lot of hardware manufacturers have yet to release fully functional drivers (but Creative, nVidia, ATI etc have them available for download).

You can use this version for 1 year before it times out.  I'd expect that it will be available retail by then.

Edit:  The site says 1st half of 2005.

Will that work only with Athlon right now? When will the 64 bit pentium for desktops be out, and when will software start going 64 bit. I imagine that 90% of software will be 64 bit in 10 years, but not all of it...

It runs on the Athlon 64 now.  Neon (Poasters administrator) has been trying out Windows XP 64-bit for some time.

Most windows OSes have been released about every 2-3 years:

1993 Windows 3.1
Late 1995 Windows 95
Late 1998 Windows 98
2000 Windows ME
2002 Windows XP

Also, now that the NT/2000 has been combined with the consumer OSes, you'd think MS would be getting them out faster. My guess is since they are moving to 64-bit, MS is having to redo a lot of code it usually just revises. I've seen benchmarks on the 64-bit alpha and beta versions, and they currently aren't that impressive as far as outperforming an identicle computer running the latest 32-bit Windows OS. The 32-bit code is likely much more fine tuned than the new 64-bit code. (Though a fine tuned version of windows is an oxymouron.)

My guess is that a final version of 64 bit Windows will be released in 2006. By then, I should be building myself an Athlon 64 4500+.

Microsoft has pushed back the release date for Windows XP 64-bit, no doubt because they need time to get a substantial group of 64-bit drivers ready.
AMD64 Device Driver Support

Microsoft has released two betas that are available for download, and just put out Release Candidate 1, which is not yet widely available. The rumor is that there will be a RC2 in February. Currently, they say the final version will be released 1st half of next year - one rumor claims that it will be March-ish. I have the last beta installed, and can say that it looks and acts very similar to WindowsXP.

Microsoft has announced that they will allow users with a valid WinXP license to upgrade to WinXP 64-bit. It isn't yet clear if this will be free, but it is hoped so.

By the way, various distributions of Linux have supported 64-bit for some time now.

As for Intel, they have announced 64-bit capable x86 chips, but there is no hardware yet, and so whether Windows supports that is a moot point. Nonetheless, it is fully expected that Microsoft will not intentionally cut Intel out, so you may expect that there will be compatibility whenever Intel gets something out the door.

As for 64-bit software, you are correct - it's going to take some time for it to appear. You can expect that the applications that need it the most will show up sooner rather than later. Here are a few of the 64-bit apps already available:
POVRay
Sisoft SANDRA
Panorama Factory
VirtualDub
Nero
Avast, Mcafee, CA eTrust antivirus
Sun Java 1.5
MySQL

Ok,

I have found all my drivers for WIN 64 but have a few questions please.

1. From the research I have done it seems as WIN64 will not support 2 sata HDs in R 0, even with the right drivers. Is the the case?

2. I have read that the last update for XP64 included a built in firewall that was missing. Does XP64 have a firewall built in at this time? Or am I completely mistaken?

3. Is there any freeware virus/spyware out there for XP64? I refuse to use McCrappy. I say that now but would if it was the only key missing  ;D I plan on using XP64 as my sole OS and any MAJOR security risk that is known would be nice to have in mind.

4. I copied the XP64 download to a CD. Is there any way to test it, if its bootable, berfore I wipe my HD?

Thanks all.

Just for an experiment, I placed the copy CD of xp in my CD and set the machine up to boot from it. Nothing happened. I broke out my old win98 CD and tried the same. It asked if I wanted to boot from it...

Is there something I am missing for XP64? I know its an ISO file, no idea what that is, and copied it directly to a CD and verified its contents. I even downloaded an ISO extractor - thinking I needed to extract it then burn it, but the extracted file was larger than a CD can hold.

I can't seem to get the burned CD working as a boot device for a fresh install.

Thanks in advance!

You can't just copy the ISO to a CD - you must write it as an image file.  Both Nero and Roxio can write an ISO file to the CD (choose "burn image").

I could not get my sata drivers to work and from what I have read it'll, xp64, have to be installed in a ide interface...GONG. No way.

Here's to driver support for XP64. I wanted to do it but am not going to give up my raid 0. I may dual boot OS but have to research what that means, if anything, from XP.

I did find a great find though at http://files.aoaforums.com/index.php?dir=224

Best driver base for XP64 I have seen - IMO

Thanks all for your input - especially Q for the image burning info  ;D

It depends on what RAID controller you have. I have a Promise FastTrak S150 controller, and there are beta drivers available here:
http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=0

You might also look at this site for 64-bit drivers and apps:
http://planetamd64.com/

They are located at the "ODD Driver Downloads" link - free registration required to access them, I believe.

I heard that Windows - 2003 was mabe for 64 bit processors. Is this true?

The Enterprise and Datacenter versions of Server 2003 are available for Intel Itanium, which is 64 bit.

The Itanium doesn't run X86 (Athlon/P4) code natively - in order to run it it has to use a special, very slow compatibility mode - so Itanium Windows will not run on X86 CPUs.
