How do I get 5.1 audio to my receiver?

I have an ATI 2600XT video card and I have it hooked up to my Denon 3808Ci receiver via HDMI.  I get picture and sound but I don't get 5.1 or 7.1 audio.  Is there something I'm missing?  What do I need to do?

Are you using a separate audio card or onboard audio?

Separate audio card.

The audio needs to be connected to your audio card. The HDMI cable is problaby on your video card. There is a certain way to connect the cables to get 5.1 on the audio cards.

Thanks.  I had done that already.  I just have to find the way of getting it 5.1.

Are you sure your source is coded with 5.1 sound? Sorry about asking the obvious, but sometimes it is the obvious that is the problem.

Yes, it is a new dvd with 5.1 and 7.1 encoded. 
I have since talked to ATI and am going to try some things.  Thanks.
