Ok just found this- The new PCI-Express will replace AGP? Wow-uh wait a sec, uh wait for it......., $Ching$$ Ching$$$$

AHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhh

I give UP!@

Wait, what is is this AGP you speak of? Is this some sort of new standard? That must be why those GeForce 2 PCI cards are finally coming down in price - ha! I was almost ready to buy one, but now they're changing the standard.

Yep, I'll stick with my ISA Trident 8900 card until the dust clears on this new standard. AGP indeed. Bah! Kings Quest runs just fine for me, what else do I need?

You are lucky you are not ADDICTED to Ultra-realistic WW2 flight sims. Ill wait for the sim to come out and get hardware reveiws for a month, then I buy, BUT I wait just a little bit   L   O   N   G   E    R .....LOL.........
Ill BET it runs $400.00 MINIMUM. 10, 000 HD's, 64 bit processors, Gig of memory, man oh man, it IS the 21st century.

Here's another preview of PCI-Express:

Since there are no parts yet, many of the details are unknown but the overall strategies of ATI and nVidia are outlined. The author definitely sympathizes with the "upgrader's dilemma".

I wonder how soon games (or other applications) will actually need the sort of graphics bandwidths that the next generation of cards will have available. It seems like the hardware capabilities are ahead of software right now.

I agree that the hardware is ahead at the moment.  I have been toying with the idea of upgrading my video card (64Mb Ti4200) for a while now but I am playing GTA3 and other games at high res and all options on with no problems at all.  Can't see the point in upgrading until I get problems running something.

Intels next chipset for its next gen processor will only have pci express.  I hope amd will not cut its throat and do this otherwise most people will have a very painful and expensive decision to make.  AGP right now provides plenty of bandwith beint as though its on its own bus. However pci is a shared bus you may have five pci slots in your computer but guess what they all share the same bandwidth.  Soundcards like the audigy2 are starting to consume far more bandwidth.  PCI express is the future of pci yet it might be a painful one.

I always loved playing Kings Quest, but haven't played it in years. I don't even know if they have new versions out or not. I guess I could check. :)

I do have some KQ floppies around here somewhere, but gave up DOS and DOS-based OSes several years ago. My friends and I were mostly into SpaceQuest and Leisure Suit Larry. At least SQ was released in a version that can be played on Windows machines.

I have a bunch of KQ floppies as well. I would love for a Windows XP version on CD to come out.

I'm pretty sure that I bought a KQ collection a few years back.  Six or seven "episodes" on CD.  I will have to try and dig it out.  Lucky I have a seperate DOS partition that I can play from.

Having thought about it, I may be severely disappointed with it now and that would probably ruin all of my fond memories.....

It's always heartbreaking to play a game you've had fond memories of... only to find out later that the game was really a piece of...

Alienware is releasing a new system this summer that is rather ridiculous in price yet intriguing.  It combines the power of 2 pci-express video cards such as the new ati x800 or the nvidia 6800 and runs them in parallel.  Thus reaching incredible speeds.  This is only for the rich since its estimated cost is around $6000.  The performance reached is anywhere from a 50% gain in fps to 75% so basicly everything would run better than flawlessly.  Alienware has something quite interesting up their sleeves.

Neon

Yeah, PC Perspective has an article on this. There is a video which shows the setup in action. It appears that each card handles rendering on one half of the screen.

In addition to the cost of the cards, 1000W power supply, custom motherboard, and liquid cooling required. :P

1000W power supply? That's nuts! :o I'll be getting a 450w power supply for my 64 project- I thought that's all that would be needed!

why would anything need 1000w?

maybe servers with alot of hard drives.... but hell.... thats alot of power :-\

From the article linked above:
QuoteGiven how the flagship system will feature two power hungry processors and two power hungry graphics cards, Alienware will be forced to upgrade the power supply and cooling solutions as well. Here, a custom power supply will provide a dizzying 800W to 1KW of power to keep the system running. The fore mentioned watercooling system will ensure that temperatures are kept at an acceptable level.

Yeah, Alienwares are very much overpriced; if you can get by with building it on your own, do it.

Igloo

what will having 2 PCI graphics cards give the user in benefit?

i mean... it will heat up the case more... and then the 2 cpu's this is going to get warm.. even if it does have water cooling...

the only peeople who i could see using this sort of power and graphical capabilities is picture editors / video editors with alot of money to spare.

Sort of like an upside down ATX board. In a tower case, the processor will be in the lower right. The expansion slots will be higher up on the back than they are now and the RAM will be more in line with the processor.

More info on BTX

PC Magazine:

Intel also announced a new reference design for future PCs. Formerly known as Big Water, the new Balance Technology Extended (BTX) design is available to motherboard designers as of Tuesday, and products based on the design are expected to appear next year, Burns said.

BTX will contain technologies such as a resilient power supply, which protects unsaved on-screen data in the event of a temporary power interruption, Burns said.
