Brody, welcome to Poasters.com It could be a defective power supply or CPU. But before I go any further can you tell us something else such as what model Q do you have, what operting system do you use, have you installed or uninstalled any hardware or software before this started. When you turn the computer on do you hear a beep or a series of beeps if so in what order are the beeps ie one beep pause then beep beep beep you get the picture. Did the monitor screen have any letters on it such as BIOS listing or Virus information. I would also mention that I would unplug the computer when not in use until you determine what is wrong as you mentioned the sizzling sound. Also what is the motehrboard make and model. This is information we need to help you. Poast back on this same thread when you have the information.

Here is what I found out....The only number that I could find to suggest a model number was Q20, but it was on the motherboard. He has a Windows 98 OS, has not installed or uninstalled anything in about 8 months. When you push the power on button, there are no beeps, the power light does not come on. No letters appear on the monitor...it stays black. Here are the numbers I found: on the motherboard--M6TBA ver 1.2 and R280C108R281. I also checked his power supply with a voltmeter and did not get any reading whatsoever. His power supply is a HIPRO model #HP235NLXAK. So far that is all I have been able to find. Thanks.

Please don't take this suggestion wrong -



Before continuing, make sure that the outlet is providing the proper current. If the computer is hooked up to a power strip or surge protector, make sure that the circuit breaker didn't trip.



If the power source to the computer checks out okay, then it seems likely that the culprit is the computer's power supply. (Just for the heck of it, verify that the PC's power cord is in good working order.) If so, we at Poasters generally recommend PC Power and Cooling for a replacement unit. It is important to use a good quality power supply, and PC Power will not disappoint you.

Brody, Scuzzy is correct, one other thing    most power supplies require a working motherboard with a working CPU, memory, and video card to function properly. ATX power supplies are turned on only through motherboards. In other words, it needs to be connected to a working computer before the fan inside the power supply starting to run and the voltage from the connectors can be measured. That's how ATX is designed.

Thanks for the info. We checked the power coming into the computer and it checked out okay. The surge protecter wasn't tripped either, so we have power coming in. I guess we will try a new power supply, then take it from there. Thanks again.

My dad has a Quantex, s/n5001892858   FTNA7350BB1. Today the mouse would not respond and he could not shut it down. He finally unplugged it. After a couple of hours, he tried to turn it on, and the on light will flicker for a minute then go off. There is no activity from the computer. He looked inside for a broken wire, but could not find one and also cleaned out the dust inside, but it will not come on at all, other than the brief flicker of the on light. He said it also made a sizzle type noise whenever he pushed the power button on. Any ideas?
